PLASTIC WEAVERS OF KUTCH

GUJARAT, INDIA

In Kutch littering is a common problem. Proving ingenious and resourceful, the plastic is collected, cleaned, sorted (providing further employment to waste collectors) and cut into strips to be woven into durable products using a traditional pit loom.

Weaving the plastic into useable items is a skill that can be easily learned and becomes a source of additional income to weavers. We collaborate with a non-profit organization that brings these women, both old and young, together and teaches them how to weave. Many weave at the organizations shared campus studio or they have the option to weave from home.
