VIRJI & sons

GUJARAT, INDIA

Located in the western most region of the western most state in India, is a small village where a handful of artisans remain that continue to practice the art of rug weaving the traditional way...by hand using a simple pit loom. In the Virji household weaving is a family affair; while father and son weave the rug, Virji's wife helps to prepare the loom and also hand ties the knotted tassels on the end of each rug. Virji has been weaving for over 40 years - a skill he learned from his father who learned from his father before him. He's passed on the skill to his eldest son in the hopes that the family tradition will continue.
